Teaching kids about snow with STEM activities

Spread the love

Here’s some great ideas for teaching kids about snow – and doing so through engaging STEM activities!

Schedule for this school week:

I’m a big dork and I love having a nicely color coded and coordinated schedule for my kiddos before we start the week. Here’s a glimpse of our schedule for “snow week”. Most of the activities in our homeschool planner for the week are linked or listed below!

PS if you’re interested in purchasing this planner, it’s well priced and nice and simple. I love the layout and simplicity – it has just what I need in it. You can purchase it on Amazon – click the picture below (and the washi tape just because it makes me so happy haha)

STEM activities to teach kids about snow:

I am so excited that we were able to wait for a snowy week before we did this unit – it snowed 2 feet at our house this week! We’ll be able to do lots of these experiments outside this week. Here’s the STEM science activities we’ll be doing over the next few days:

Snowstorm in a Jar via One Little Project
Snowstorm in a jar: tutorial from Little Bins for Little Hands

OK so this one isn’t exactly snow, but it goes along with it!

Melting ice experiment from The Chaos and the Clutter
Snow volcano science activity : via Science Sparks

First grade snow activities:

While worksheets aren’t my favorite learning tool, they are certainly a tool we use daily! Anyone else have a kid who actually loves doing worksheets? I do 😆

I made up a packet of snow-themed activities for my first grader, and I have it listed on my TeachersPayTeachers page right now.

Snow sensory bin ideas:

We ended up doing a simple pom pom sensory bin for my kids this week:

But our arctic animal sensory bin (with our homemade white glitter playdough) would be perfect for this theme too!:

Snow art activities for kids:

These tape resist snowflake paintings are so cute and can probably be done with things you already have on hand (you saw earlier that I have plenty of washi tape haha):

We did this cute craft and loved how it turned out:

I love how these salt painted snowflakes look – can’t wait to try them this week!

Another art project that can probably be done with materials you have in your house: this cute puffy snow paint:

And playdough snowflakes are always a good no-prep idea! We love these little snowflake “cookie cutters” we got a few weeks ago! Click on the little picture to shop them on Amazon 🙂

Here’s the videos we’re using to teach our kids about snow this week!

Poems about snow

OK I’ll be honest – I don’t love poetry. And my husband even writes it – haha! But I’m working on teaching my kids about different kinds of writing and realized we hadn’t done much on poetry yet. Here’s the poems we’ll be reading this week:

S is for snow free coloring page:

I made this free download for you guys so you can use it with your littles who are working on their alphabet and beginning sounds. You can download it for free on my Teachers Pay Teachers page (would you rate and follow me if you use this? I’m brand new over there and I’d so appreciate any support I can get! Thank you!)
