Igloo activities for kids – including STEM projects, educational videos, dramatic play ideas, and more! Some affiliate links are included.
We’ve been learning about arctic animals lately, and about the arctic climate as well. My kids and I have been reading The Snow Bear (a good read aloud book for young kids!) and it’s brought a lot of questions about igloos and how people can survive in the arctic. So, this week we’re diving deeper into the subject and learning all about igloos!

Here’s some of the activities we’ll be doing this week. Follow me on Instagram so I can show you these throughout the week (and more activities as we find them too!)

Igloo dramatic play center ideas:
OK this is probably what I’m most excited about. I LOVE the dramatic play aspect of childhood learning. I also love how all 3 of my kids (ages 2, 5, and 7) can really play with this so differently but all still really enjoy it.
My 7 year old learns in-depth facts with me about igloos, and helped me to make it a more accurate igloo. He also loves to build things, so he constructed the igloo himself. This kind of problem solving, manipulating, and calculating is so much fun to watch! Make sure you don’t discount just how important these things are for brain development.
Here’s what our igloo looks like:
My son used this fort building kit to build the structure of the igloo. We highly recommend it – the possibilities are endless with this kit! And then we put this blanket that’s super well priced to go over top. (fun fact – we also used it as our Christmas tree skirt!)
And here’s some other igloo dramatic play centers I found on the internet for you to be inspired by:
Look at this sweet fun “arctic glamping” setup from Putting the Pretty in Preschool:

This website is in Dutch – you can see more pictures of her setup on her blog post though!

Sadly, I have no sources for the rest of these igloos, but I hope you can be inspired by them:

Learning about the Arctic region:
We will be taking time to learn about the Arctic region of the world this week as well. Part of this includes the animals of the region, the weather, and learning about the Inuit people as well.
Like always, we do a LOT of our learning through books. Here are the books we will be reading this week to teach us more together (just click each picture to be brought to the product page):
Igloo STEM activities:
You know I love a great STEM activity to encourage learning! Here’s some of the activities we’ll be trying this week:
We’ll be building an igloo (all you need is half an apple, peanut butter, and marshmallows!) See this idea over at Mrs. Plemons Kindergarten here:

Preschool Powol Packets has this great idea to build an igloo out of ice – it looks like the process will take us a few days! We’ll be working on this throughout the week:

I love this igloo art project as well (find instructions here):
